Use analogous only if you are drawing an abstract analogy—an abstract comparison of multiple points.  Use similar if you are making a simple one-to-one comparison.

EXAMPLES: The lobster is not similar to the cockroach.  The lobster is a crustacean; the cockroach is an insect.

The relationship between the God of the Hebraic Bible and humankind is analogous to the relationship between a tyrannical father and his obstreperous children.
